Apple Dictation alternatives, starting with a free one.
Apple Dictation costs nothing and is already on your Mac. People outgrow it for the same few reasons: it gets names and jargon wrong with no way to teach it, it keeps no history, and it does not lay text out. Each app below fixes a different part of that, and one of them is also free.

The best free alternative to Apple Dictation on a Mac is Spokenly's local plan, which runs Whisper and Parakeet on your device with no usage limit. VoiceInk is the cheapest paid option at $25 once. Blurt, at $3.99 a month, adds a vocabulary that learns, local AI cleanup and meeting transcription with no account. Apple Dictation itself is still the right answer for short messages.
The six worth trying, in order.
1. Spokenly — free, and a better model
Its Local Models plan is $0 with no usage limit, running Whisper and Parakeet on your device on Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone, checked 30 Sept 2026. If Apple's accuracy is the only problem, start here. AI cleanup needs its Pro plan at $9.99 a month or your own API key.
2. VoiceInk — pay once, open source
$25 once for one Mac, $39 for two, $49 for three, with lifetime updates, checked 30 Sept 2026. Whisper and Parakeet on device, a dictionary for names, per-app Power Mode and an iPhone app. The source is public, so the privacy claim can be checked. No meeting capture.
3. Blurt — if you want it to learn, and to stay local
$3.99 a month, $29 a year or $99 once. Whisper and Parakeet on your Mac, a custom vocabulary plus corrections it learns from your edits, filler removal and paragraph formatting from a local model with no key, searchable history, and meeting transcription with no bot. No account. Apple Silicon only, and no free tier beyond the trial and 20 dictations a day. We make it, so weigh that.
4. Superwhisper — the most configurable
$8.49 a month or $84.99 a year, with a free tier and no time limit, checked Sept 2026. Local Whisper plus optional cloud models, custom modes, and apps for Windows and iOS. Pro needs an account.
5. Wispr Flow — the most polished, in the cloud
$15 a month, or $12 billed annually, checked Sept 2026. The least setup and the smoothest editing in the category, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Your speech is processed on its servers and you need an account.
6. MacWhisper — if you meant recordings, not typing
Pro at 64 euros once, checked Sept 2026. It transcribes files, folders, podcasts and video with speaker recognition, and has system-wide dictation in Pro. If what you want is a transcript of something already recorded, this is the one.
FAQ
What is the best free alternative to Apple Dictation on Mac?
Spokenly's Local Models plan, which runs Whisper and Parakeet on your device for $0 with no usage limit, as of 30 September 2026. Superwhisper also has a free tier with local Whisper.
Why does Apple Dictation get names wrong?
It has no custom vocabulary beyond the names in your Contacts, so it cannot be taught the product names, colleagues and jargon you actually say. The apps above add a dictionary or replacement rules, and Blurt also learns from corrections you make in its history.
Is Apple Dictation private?
It runs on device for supported languages and uses Apple's servers for others. VoiceInk, Blurt and Spokenly's local plan transcribe on your Mac in every language they support.
Which alternatives keep a history of what I dictated?
Blurt keeps searchable, editable history on your Mac, and most of the paid apps above keep some form of history. Apple Dictation keeps none: if the text lands in the wrong window, it is gone.
