The best dictation app for Mac depends on one question.
Do you want your voice processed on your own machine, or are you fine with it going to a server? Answer that and the shortlist collapses to two or three apps.
We build one of these, so read this with that in mind. The list below is the one we would give a friend, including the parts where another app is the better buy. Every price was read off an official page in September 2026 and prices in this category move often, so check before you pay.
Pick by what you actually need.
You want free: Apple Dictation
It is built into macOS, costs nothing and works on your iPhone too. It has no custom vocabulary beyond your contacts, no history, and no formatting. For short messages that is fine, and no paid app beats free until the misheard names start costing you time.
You want cheapest paid: VoiceInk
Open source, on-device, no account, and listed on its own site at $25 for one Mac in September 2026. If you want local dictation and nothing else, this is the least you can spend. Blurt costs more and earns it only if you want the extras.
You need Windows or a phone: Wispr Flow or Voibe
Flow covers macOS, Windows, iPhone and Android, with team plans, at $15 a month. Voibe covers Mac and Windows. Both need an account, and both put dictation through a server at least some of the time. That is the trade for coverage.
You want local, private and cheap to run: Blurt
Whisper or Parakeet on your own Mac, no account of any kind, $3.99 a month or $99 once. Formatting runs on a local model, meetings are captured from your mic and system audio without a bot, and the dictionary learns from your corrections. Apple Silicon only.

What is the best free dictation app for Mac?
Apple's built-in dictation, because it is already there. After that, Superwhisper has a free tier that runs Whisper locally with no time limit, and VoiceInk is free if you compile it yourself. Blurt gives you 14 unrestricted days and then keeps working at 20 dictations a day.
Is on-device dictation as accurate as cloud dictation?
For typing what you just said, yes. Local apps run Whisper large-v3-turbo, which is the same family of model most cloud dictation services use. Cloud services pull ahead on heavy rewriting and long context work, not on transcription.
Which apps do not require an account?
Blurt and VoiceInk. Superwhisper needs one for Pro, Voibe creates one in the app, and Wispr Flow cannot work without one. If you want no profile tied to your dictation, that narrows the field fast.
Do any of these work on an Intel Mac?
Superwhisper and Voibe do. Blurt does not, and neither do the newest local models in general, because they lean on Apple Silicon acceleration. Check your hardware before you buy anything in the local column.
How much disk space does local dictation need?
Plan for one to two gigabytes. Blurt's default Whisper model is 874 MB, with a 574 MB compact option and a 1.6 GB maximum accuracy build, plus 1.3 GB more if you use the local formatting model.
